Council Approves Contract for HEB Park and HEB Tennis Center Parking Lot Improvements

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council awarded a $711,368 contract to Brooke Paving & Construction, LLC, for the reconstruction of the HEB Park parking lot and the resurfacing of the adjacent HEB Tennis Center parking lot. Funding for the project comes from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

HEB Park, a 12-acre site acquired through the H.E. Butt Foundation, was established as the City of Corpus Christi’s first public swimming pool in 1963. Additionally, the park offers a variety of recreational facilities, including a playground, handball court, and basketball court for visitors to enjoy.

In 1959, the HEB Foundation generously donated 8 acres to develop the first of over a dozen tennis centers in Texas. The HEB Tennis Center officially opened in 1960 and features 25 lighted courts, comprising 22 outdoor courts and three covered courts for pickleball. The center also includes two elevated platforms overlooking twelve courts, shaded tables, and open areas to accommodate hundreds of spectators, making it an ideal destination venue to host large events. Furthermore, the tennis center houses a pro shop offering a diverse selection of apparel and accessories and professional racquet stringing services.

The entire HEB Park site accommodates parking for up to 300 vehicles, so the City needed to improve the parking area, which had fallen into disrepair.

“H-E-B Park is a shining example of our City’s dedication to providing top-tier recreational spaces for our residents,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “With the family-friendly H-E-B Pool, the impressive H-E-B Tennis Center, and now improved parking for 300 vehicles, we are enhancing the experience for families, athletes, and fans while strengthening our community spirit.”

Construction is anticipated to begin in March, with an expected completion by August.
