Biography of Jim Klein

Jim Klein is a Professor of History at Del Mar College having earned a Ph.D. in this field from Oklahoma State University for his dissertation entitled “A Social History of Prohibition in Oklahoma, 1900-1920”. He has since studied the history of liquor policy in Georgia and south Texas as well. Jim has taught United States History at Del Mar College since 2006 and currently chairs the DMC Curriculum Committee.

Jim has served on the Corpus Christi Landmark Commission, including a stint as that body’s Chair. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Nueces County Historical Commission and currently serves as Vice Chair of that organization. Jim has served as President of the DMC chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and as President of the Texas Conference of the AAUP (as of 2022 affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers) and currently serves as President of the Texas Association of College Teachers.

Jim has been involved in numerous community groups. He is a founding member of the Clean Economy Coalition and serves as that body’s Chair. In that capacity, he has served on the Corpus Christi Cole and Ropes Park (CARP) Committee tasked with devising an Implementation Plan to reduce bacteria levels in Corpus Christi Bay. Jim also chairs the Coastal Bend Sierra Club group, representing members living in Corpus Christi and in eighteen counties surrounding the city. He is a founding member of the Coastal Alliance to Protect our Environment, an alliance of twenty-two local environmental groups. He also serves as a board member for the Corpus Christi TaxPayers Association.

With the help of many supporters, Jim was elected to a Corpus Christi City Council At Large seat in 2022.
