Biography of Sony Peronel
Sony Peronel joined the City of Corpus Christi in 2019 and is currently an Assistant City Manager, overseeing the Public Library System, Communications, Intergovernmental Affairs, Information Technology, Animal Care Services, and the Health District. He was promoted to Assistant City Manager after demonstrating strong leadership in his roles as Interim Assistant City Manager and Assistant to the City Manager, during which he oversaw the Public Library, Communications, and Intergovernmental Affairs departments.
Under his leadership, Peronel has implemented key initiatives for the City, including the formation of the first Marketing Division within the Communications Department and bringing high-profile events to Corpus Christi, including the 27th annual MLK March and Junior Olympic Boxing.
Sony is dedicated to ensuring efficient operations and responsible City governance. Before his time in Corpus Christi, he gained over 11 years of high-level experience in municipal roles, including positions in the City of San Antonio’s Office of Management and Budget and the City Manager’s Office.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Central Florida. Sony is deeply involved in the Corpus Christi community, serving as an Associate Commissioner for Buc Days and as a Community Investment Panelist for United Way of the Coastal Bend. In 2023, he was recognized as one of Corpus Christi’s 40 Under 40, and in 2024, he received the H. Boyd Hall Chapter of the NAACP’s prestigious President’s Award.
Sony is also an active member of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), the Texas Municipal League (TML), and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA).
