Short Term Rentals (STR)
At the City Council meeting on June 28, 2022, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo and the City Council approved a new Short-Term Rental Ordinance. The ordinance amends the City’s Unified Development Code (UDC) to allow short-term rentals (STRs) with restrictions in single-family residential districts citywide but not in single-family residential districts within the Padre/Mustang Island Area Development Plan area. The STR Ordinance requires registration of any property that is rented for less than 30 consecutive days in all areas of Corpus Christi.
Owner/operators of properly zoned Short-Term Rentals within the city limits must apply for a registration permit using the link below beginning on July 11, 2022. The city will continue to accept applications for the Flour Bluff and Padre/Mustang Island areas for STR units located in multi-family and commercial zoned areas. Proposed STR units located within single family zoned areas in Flour Bluff will be eligible to apply for the permit on July 11, 2022.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a short-term rental (STR)?
What is the difference between a short-term rental, a hotel, and a bed & breakfast?
- A short-term rental is a property that rents out all or a portion of a residential dwelling unit for a period of less than 30 days and not less than 12 hours.
- A hotel is a building in which members of the public obtain sleeping accommodations for consideration, or the cost of a room ordinarily used for sleeping. The term includes a hotel, motel, tourist home, tourist house, tourist court, lodging house, inn, rooming house, or bed and breakfast.
- A bed and breakfast home is a private, owner-occupied residence that offers sleeping accommodations to not more than 10 lodgers. A bed and breakfast home is not a single-family house.
- All three (3) are required to submit the Hotel Occupancy Tax but only Short-Term Rentals are required to register for a permit to operate.
Where are short-term rentals allowed?
- Type 1 (owner/operator occupied STR): an STR that is the primary residence of the owner/operator. These are allowed throughout the city with no restrictions with the exception of Padre/Mustang Island (see last bullet).
- Type 2 (non-owner/operator occupied STR): an STR that is not the primary residence of the owner/operator. These STRs are limited to 15% of the block face and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis with the exception of Padre/Mustang Island (see last bullet).
- Exception: STRs are not permitted in single-family zoning districts within the Padre/Mustang Island ADP.
