The academy may last up to 20 months. During this time, cadets receive training in both Fire and EMS subjects.

All potential candidates may be required to take a polygraph examination.

While in the academy, cadets will typically work Monday - Friday, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The hours may be flexed to accommodate hospital, clinical or ambulatory ride outs. Upon graduation from the academy, Firefighters work a 24-hour shift on and 48 hours off.

The City of Corpus Christi provides health and life coverage for the employee and 50% of dependent coverage. Trainees begin immediate participation in the Firefighters Retirement System. Upon graduation from the Academy, the City provides the initial uniform and a monthly allowance after that for upkeep. Cadets earn 15 days sick leave, 15 days vacation, and 7 paid holidays per year. There is also additional incentive pay for applicable certifications and college hours.

The exam consists of general knowledge, such as reading, math, interpersonal skills, teamwork, commitment, honesty, integrity, and emotional stability. The exam consists of 100 questions and must be taken within 2.5 hours. There is not a study guide for this exam.

Firefighters may live outside the city limits but must reside in such a location as to be able to reach City Hall within 60 minutes by traveling by automobile at posted speeds in ordinary weekday traffic.

Applicants who qualify for Military points will have five (5) points added to their passing test score. To qualify for military points, a candidate must have been Honorably Discharged and submit a DD214 demonstrating at least 180 days of Active Duty Status. No other discharge status will be accepted.

The physical demands are vigorous. Firefighters are called upon to perform hazardous tasks requiring strenuous exertion under emergency conditions. Often, these tasks are performed in a hostile environment such as smoke, extreme heat, toxic gases, and confined spaces.
