Classes and Food Handlers Permits
The Texas Department of State Health Services, under Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER) §228.31, requires that ‘…all food employees shall successfully complete an accredited food handler training course, within 30 days of employment.’ Food employee is an individual working with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or food-contact surfaces under FDA Food Code, 1-2 Definitions, "Food Employee".
The food handler card or certificate is valid up to the expiration date listed on the card or certificate. If the card or certificate does not bare an expiration date, then the card or certificate is valid for two (2) years from date of issuance under 25 TAC §229.178 relating to Accreditation of Food Handler Education or Training Programs.
The Health Department is an accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services to offer a Food Handlers Course.
Classes
Food Handler Classes are held every Monday (except on holidays) at 9 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Spanish Class is held every 3rd Thursday (except on holidays) of the month at 3 p.m.

Food Manager's Certification and Registration
The Health Department does not offer food manager’s certification. Please contact the Certified Food Managers Program with the Texas Department of Health Services at (512) 834-6727 for any additional information.
