In the year 2020, the city of Corpus Christi fell victim to scams and gave scammers over $700,000. Please be aware of the following when it comes to scams: The Police Department, nor any government agency will ever ask for large sums of money to avoid being arrested or to make payment through any type of gift cards.

Victim Assistance
If you fall victim to a financial crime:

- Call the police and file a report immediately. A case number will be provided to you when the report is complete.
- Your case will be reviewed by a supervisor for solvability and assigned to an investigator if investigative leads exist.
- If you have additional evidence or a supplemental loss you would like to add to your case, please contact our telephone reporting unit at 361-886-2600.
- If you have further questions about your case or need to schedule an appointment, you can contact the Criminal Investigations Division Help Desk at 361-886-2840 with your case number readily available.
When following up with a detective, be sure to have the following information available for the following offenses:
Credit Card Abuse:
Transaction date, time, and location
Bank statement
Full card number or last four
Forgery (checks):
Date, time, and location of where the check was cashed
Image of the front and back of the check
Bank statement
Please note that our detectives can only investigate criminal offenses which occur within our jurisdiction. In most cases, any money awarded back to a victim is done so once the case has been tried at court.
Unfortunately, due to the resources needed to investigate some identity crimes; CCPD will not investigate identity crimes that include the following:

- Cybercrimes (online scams or accounts)
- IRS
- Unemployment benefits
Most of these businesses have their own fraud department that investigate these.
After making a police report, be sure to contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/complaint or 1(877)438-4338. We advise that you contact the credit reporting companies, as well: Equifax 1(800)525-6285, Experian 1(888)397-3742, and TransUnion 1(800)680-7289.
We do not investigate civil matters such as:

- Financial issues between married or common law couples
- Financial issues concerning probate for the death of a family member
